THE DEVIL IN HIS DRINK
The Temptress in the bottle
eyed him with a wink;
and his mind fogged up while dancing
with
the devil in his drink.
The fence...it needed mending
and the mortgage payment.. due..
the bills, just way too many
and the assets just too few.
But the temptress in the bottle
said she'd take his cares away;
and the devil in the drink
advised to boogie while you may.
So he downed the beckoning bottle
and he did the devil's dance;
and the devil and the temptress watched him
while away his chance....
his chance to bail before the rain
ruined the new mown hay,
or see the high school football game
and watch his Jesse play.
The temptress and the devil
watched him do the whisky jig...
About the hay or football,
he no longer cared a fig.
Danglin' from the bar stool-
and drinkin' up his check...
remembering the unbailed hay
and thinkin', "What the heck".
Feelin' sorry for himself
and drinkin' all the day.
He later cursed the clouds that burst
and ruined his new-mown hay,
The temptress lured him, led him on.
He teetered o'er the brink.
His mind then wrapped its arms around
the devil in his drink.
